7 Simple Ways to Get Physically Active This Summer

Physical activity is a healthy outlet for everyone. It’s beneficial for both the body and the mind and can be a deterrent from developing many chronic diseases. Even if exercise has been difficult in the past, here are some simple day to day ways to incorporate physical activity into your routine.

1.Take the stairs

A simple way to get your heart pumping is to stop relying on the elevator, and choose to use the stairs instead. Is your office on the 3rd floor? Or are you visiting a department store? Choose to walk up the stairs instead of opting for the elevator or escalator.

2. Park far away from the entrance

Taking a trip to the movie theater or grocery store? Instead of struggling to find that prime parking spot at the entrance, choose to park at the back of the parking lot. When you make these small choices daily, these extra steps can add up fast.

3. Take your phone calls on the go

Most adults spend the majority of their day sitting in their office chairs. Consider taking a few phone calls a day, while you take a walk. Just throw in your headphones and talk while you walk. Walking an extra 20 minutes for each phone call can be a simple way to get your heart beating, not to mention the added benefits of gaining some sunshine during the work week.

4. Join a team sport

For many, a regular gym routine can start to feel dull and boring. Instead of hitting the treadmill, think about joining a team sport such as flag football, volleyball, or softball. In addition to getting active, you’ll get an added bonus of social stimulation, which is great for your mental health, too.

5. Get out for a bike ride

Bike rides are a great way to get your heart pumping. Start out by taking it slow. Easy rides around the neighborhood can slowly turn into more challenging mountain rides before you know it.

6. Spend some time on the water

The best place to spend the summer is out on the water. Activities such as swimming, paddle boarding, and kayaking can be calming activities that don’t even feel like a workout. Just don’t forget the sunblock- you want to make sure your skin is healthy too!

7. Clean the house

You don’t have to get out of the house to get your heart pumping. Try getting off the couch to wash the windows, vacuum the carpets, or dust the house. Living in a clean and organized house can do wonders for your mental health, too!
