What is autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or autism is a developmental disorder that affects a person’s social communication and interaction. Individuals with ASD also have restricted and repetitive behavior, interests and activities. These characteristics fall across a “spectrum” ranging from mild to severe. While one person may have symptoms that impair his or her ability to perform daily activities, another may have only mildly noticeable differences and have few, if any, functional impairments.

What are the symptoms of Autism?

The following are the most common symptoms of autism. However, each child may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

  • Speech delay
  • Repeats or echo words or phrases
  • Avoids eye contact
  • Does not smile when smiled at
  • Does not respond to his or her name
  • Does not point, wave, or use gestures to communicate
  • Does not initiate or respond to cuddling, prefers to be alone
  • Does not ask for help or make basic requests
  • Difficulty changing routines
  • Poor imaginary play
  • Hand flapping, rocking, spinning, lining up of toys

At the Children’s Wellness & Developmental Center we understand that Autism can be challenging. As a team we will work together to find the right fit for the child and family

Children’s Wellness & Developmental Center

At the Children’s Wellness & Developmental Center we are committed to improving the health and well-being of children and families affected by ADHD, Autism and Developmental Delays. Through experience and training we provide a diagnosis and individual treatment plans, with the use of traditional and biomedical treatment options.

At the Children’s Wellness & Developmental Center, we pride ourselves in treating the whole person, not just the diagnosis. We provide a loving and caring environment for families that face very challenging situations. We pride ourselves on taking the time to listen and develop a plan for the child and family. We strongly believe that each child is an individual and no two children are alike, therefore no two treatment plans can be alike.

We believe early diagnosis for individual children affected by Autism, ADHD and developmental delays, along with intensive therapies, biomedical treatments, and medical intervention is the key to the child’s best prognosis.
